"Vertical Ethiopia: Climbing Towards Possibility in the Horn of Africa " Ms. Majka Burhardt
|
Planned Remarks:
In March 2007, Majka Burhardt led a team of women on a climbing expedition on Ethiopia's virgin sandstone rock towers, which extend 600 feet up into the clouds. To record her experience, she has produced a new book - Vertical Ethiopia: Climbing Towards Possibility in the Horn of Africa (out in January)- that explores that region's social and economic landscape from the perspective of an adventurer exploring northern Ethiopia.
Ms. Burhardt has biked, canoed, and hike her way around the world, traveling from the Himalayan peaks to the sea cliffs of Europe, from the southern Argentina to the Arctic Ocean. With extensive travel and adventure behind her, Ms. Burhardt has plenty of experiences to draw on in her examination of the intersection of culture, politics, and society in the global context.
