"International quiz contest for high schools"
Academic WorldQuest-2008
Planned Remarks:   Academic WorldQuest March 1 - 3:30 to 7:00 PM

What’s WorldQuest? It’s a team trivia game testing competitor’s knowledge of international affairs, geography, history, & culture with questions on current events and fun facts. It is a flagship program of the World Affairs Councils of America now widely played at the adult and high school levels around the country. See http://www.worldaffairscouncils.org/programs/flagship/worldquest/.

2007 Competition: On February 24, 2007, Saint Andrews High School from Boca Raton beat out high school teams from Alexander Dreyfoos from West Palm Beach; Atlantic Community and American Heritage from Delray Beach; Benjamin School from Palm Beach Gardens; St. Edwards from Vero Beach; Seminole Ridge from Loxahatchee, and Suncoast Community from Riviera Beach. In the National contest in Washington D.C. on April 1, Saint Andrews finished THIRD of 50 teams from across the United States.

How is the game played: The game is a contest between 4-8 person high school teams. Teams compete by answering rounds of questions testing knowledge of current affairs, world leaders, geography, recent history, flags, international organizations, countries, regions, the world economy, culture and religion. The WACA National web site includes specific information for preparation including topics, past year questions, etc. The New York Times is the source for current event and many other topic questions. The internet is also a good source of information for all the topics.

Academic WorldQuest 2008 for the Palm Beaches: The local competition in the Palm Beaches will be held Saturday, March 1, 2008, from 3:30 to 7:00 PM. The winning local high school team will represent the World Affairs Council of the Florida Palm Beaches in Washington, D.C. on April 5, 2008 in the National Academic WorldQuest competition.

National Academic WorldQuest Weekend: The 3 1/2 hour competition is embedded in a long weekend of activities in Washington in late March/early April. Friday night is a dinner and mixer. Saturday morning is free time for participants to tour the museums and monuments. Saturday lunch is for an open-floor discussion with a member of the media. Academic WorldQuest is played on Saturday afternoon. The competition is followed by prizes, a pizza dinner, and entertainment. Sunday morning is free time for participants to sightsee in Washington, DC.

What Does it Cost? The World Affairs Council of the Florida Palm Beaches will cover the costs of the local competition and pay a stipend towards the cost for the local team winner (4 students & 1 chaperone) for the airline flights and hotel costs in Washington D.C. National sponsorship funds cover the event costs in Washington including the competition, facilities, breakfasts and dinners, tours, prizes, and buses.

How to Get into the Competition? High school sponsors should complete and send the final pledge of participation in Academic WorldQuest 2008 to the Council School Outreach Program Director by December 15, 2007.
